We are delighted to share a significant (and, it must be said, rather satisfying) achievement for Exhibition Road. A specialist non-friction surface has now been successfully installed on Exhibition Road / Prince Consort Road roundabout.
For many years, this location has been a well-known hotspot for car meets, where the roundabout unfortunately doubled as an unofficial racetrack for dangerous stunts and donuts. While impressive to some, these activities posed serious risks to public safety and contributed to ongoing anti-social behaviour—much to the frustration of residents.
Now, thanks to this new surface, the roundabout has effectively retired from its high-speed career. In short: no grip, no tricks. Drivers attempting stunts will find that the laws of physics are no longer on their side.
This project represents excellent partnership working and determination, delivered in close collaboration between the Met Police and Councillor Rachael Robathan. It’s a great example of thinking creatively to solve a persistent issue—and, importantly, doing so in a way that makes a real difference on the ground.
This is a fantastic achievement for the team and for the community. We hope it marks the end of the roundabout’s days in the spotlight—and its return to what it does best: being a roundabout.
We would like to thank the Highways Team from Westminster City Council for all their hard working in delivering this innovative solution.
